What requirements do student-athletes need to meet to be eligible?

NAIA CONCEPTS:

Every NAIA student-athlete has 10 terms of attendance to compete in 4 seasons of competition.

NEW LEGISLATION: Effective May 1, 2023

Students who complete their baccalaureate/undergraduate degrees can only continue competing if they are pursuing a post-baccalaureate/graduate degree.

NEW LEGISLATION: Effective August 1, 2023

POST-BACCALAUREATE ELIGIBILITY


"A student who has completed all academic requirements for graduation from a four-year institution may continue to competeprovided the student is enrolled in and pursuing post-baccalaureate coursework as described in Article V, Section E. A studentwho is not enrolled in such additional coursework and who has completed all academic requirements for graduation from a four-year institution as defined by that institution shall no longer be eligible to compete in intercollegiate athletics."


 

TRANSFER RESIDENCY

NEW LEGISLATION: Effective Date: May 1, 2023 as applied to eligibility decisions for NAIAcompetition in August 2023 or beyond


"A student who has identified at a previous institution(s) and thentransfers to an NAIA member institution is not required to sit aresidency period prior to competing in the NAIA. Intra-conferenceresidency requirements may apply."


Intent: To remove the 16-week residency requirement that currentlyexists when a student has transferred from a four-year institutionwhere they competed to an NAIA institution.


 

Recruiting Rules


 

Schedules and Participation Limits:

  • Each team has a maximum number of varsity games, contests or playing dates an institution may schedule.

  • No student may compete in a sport in an academic year in more than the number of games, contests or playing dates.

  • For a contest of any kind (i.e. scrimmage, exhibition, game/meet, etc.), once the contest has commenced the designation of the type of contest will be officially recorded as such, and the designation cannot be changed retroactively.

 

EXPECTATIONS:

You are not expected to know all the rules, but you are expected to know that there is a rule and to look for the answer or ask the question.
